Many in our culture dismiss the high numbers of psychological disorders and substance abuse or claim these problems are the result of discrimination and poor treatment of the gay community. However, even in gay-friendly countries like the Netherlands, where same-sex marriage has been legal since 2001, rates of anxiety, depression, and drug dependence are much higher among gay men and women. 12

This data isn’t meant to make gay family members and friends look bad. Because the lives and well-being of people are at stake, we need to take an honest and sobering look at the facts before we affirm a lifestyle that causes great harm. As Christians, we should also be moved to love and show compassion for people we know who live a gay lifestyle.
